Building Mechanical Engineering

Building mechanical systems are at the core of a building’s day-to-day operation. When properly designed, they ensure occupant comfort, indoor air quality, system reliability, and long-term operational efficiency.

At St-Georges, we design mechanical systems with a clear understanding of real-world conditions: building use, existing constraints, maintenance requirements, operating costs, and long-term evolution. Our approach favors robust, practical, and well-integrated solutions, whether for new construction, renovation, or redevelopment projects.

Working closely with other disciplines, we strive to achieve the right balance between performance, simplicity, and durability, always keeping in mind the needs of occupants and facility management teams.

01

HVAC System Design

The design of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems aims to ensure occupant comfort while optimizing the building’s energy performance. We analyze thermal loads, ventilation requirements, and architectural constraints to develop solutions tailored to the building’s use, climate, and intended mode of operation. Each system is carefully sized to achieve a balanced combination of efficiency, reliability, and ease of maintenance.

Our approach emphasizes clear, high-performing concepts: appropriate equipment selection, seamless integration within the building, proper control of airflow and temperature, and close coordination with other disciplines. The objective is to deliver durable, code-compliant systems designed for long-term energy and operational performance.

02

Plumbing System Design

Plumbing system design ensures the reliable distribution of potable water and the efficient drainage of sanitary and stormwater systems, in full compliance with applicable codes and regulations. We size supply, drainage, and venting networks based on anticipated usage, required flow rates, and building constraints to provide safe, durable, and dependable operation.

Our mandates may include the design of domestic hot water systems, pressure management, backflow prevention devices, and the integration of specialized equipment depending on the nature of the project. All systems are carefully coordinated with other disciplines to ensure cohesive implementation, simplified maintenance, and long-term performance.

03

Automatic Control Systems

Building automation ensures intelligent control and optimization of HVAC and plumbing systems. We design control systems that automate equipment operation to improve performance, reliability, and energy efficiency based on actual occupancy patterns and operating conditions.

Our mandates include the development of control sequences, coordination of mechanical equipment, and integration with Building Management Systems (BMS). The implemented solutions provide remote access to key parameters — heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, and other interconnected systems — facilitating operation, performance monitoring, and real-time adjustments.

When required, we also integrate building automation and smart building components to ensure overall consistency between occupant comfort, energy optimization, and ease of use.

04

Energy Efficiency

We support our clients in improving the energy performance of their buildings, both in new design and in the optimization of existing systems. Our approach is based on a rigorous analysis of mechanical systems to identify realistic, measurable interventions aligned with the project’s objectives.

We perform energy simulations and comparative studies to evaluate various technical scenarios and guide decision-making toward sustainable and economically sound solutions. We also assist with applications for financial incentives, including the APH Select program and Hydro-Québec’s Efficient Solutions (OSE) programs.

For existing buildings, we optimize current systems — adjusting control sequences, replacing targeted equipment, and improving overall performance — with the objective of reducing operating costs while maintaining occupant comfort.

05

Fire Protection

Fire protection design ensures occupant safety and regulatory compliance through the development of reliable systems tailored to the project’s level of risk. We design automatic sprinkler systems, specialized fire protection systems, and related infrastructure in coordination with architectural, structural, and mechanical components.

Our services include needs assessment, coordination with applicable code requirements, hydraulic criteria verification, and full integration of fire protection systems within the overall building concept. Whether for new construction or renovation projects, we prioritize efficient, compliant solutions that align with the technical and operational constraints of the site.
